Annemarie's LOST Custom Making Of Video

Last week we showed you the LOST custom that artist Annemarie made for an online charity auction. Which is still on going by the way with a leading bid of $750! The auction ends on August 29. But today, Annemarie released this time lapsed video of the custom's creation from start to finish. It is simply a fascinating look into the making of a wonderfully detailed Vinylmation. It was actually picked up by the official LOST Facebook page... and now by DV. Here you go:

Ep. 085 Blackout

This week we of course talk about the price hike for Star Wars 2. We also discuss the new series, I Love Mickey and run down the silent auction catalog for Mickey's Circus. Park 10 is reviewed. The Mystery Mail Bag is also full of great questions and comments. And if you listen to the end, you might learn some physics!

Cancer Gets LOST Charity Auction

Our friend and custom Vinylmation artist Annemarie alerted us to a wonderful online charity auction called Cancer Gets Lost that will take place from August 15-29.
By the logo, you can probably tell this a Lost TV show themed auction. There are many great items available that include set props, scripts, autographed items and custom artwork. Annemarie is donating a custom Vinylmation to the cause.

Her design brilliantly brings together many of the mysterious items of the Lost island. The ears feature a very cartoonish Locke and Jack standing over the hatch. I really love the drawing style she used for them.

On the head we see the numbers... green against a black background as if they were typed onto a computer screen. We can also see Jacob's scale. The body of the vinyl largely represents the beach with the jungle in the background. On the right foot is the plane wreckage while the left is the foot of the giant statue. Of course you see the black smoke wrapping around the entire figure.

The back has the Donkey Wheel, Locke's letter to Jack and the hatch countdown clock. The note looks just perfectly situated. The Blast Door Map takes up the entire back of the head and is drawn with exquisite detail.

For Lost fans, this custom is a real delight. It delivers a ton of fun little treats all around the canvas. The starting bid is set at $88. Of course, this is not Annemarie's first Lost custom. Remember Locke and Hurley?

We are of course focusing on Annemarie's Vinylmation here, but there is a ton of great artwork up for auction. Here are a few of my favorites.
Autographed LOST Print: Jason Munn "4-Toed Statue" #13/300 (signed by Damon Lindelof)
Opening Bid: $23.00
-

Autographed LOST Print: Eric Tan "The Crash" #16/300 (signed by Damon Lindelof)
Opening Bid: $23.00
-

Autographed LOST Mini Print: "Han Sawyer vs. Radzinsky" (signed by Damon Lindelof)
Opening Bid: $8.00
-
There are actually bunch of Lost/Star Wars mash ups including movie posters. And as I mentioned, a few collectibles as well.
Authentic Autographed LOST Script: "The Constant" (Signed by Damon L & Carlton C)
Opening Bid: $42.00
-

Authentic LOST Screen-used Short Wood Table from Survivors' Beach Camp
Opening Bid: $88.00
-

Cancer Gets LOST is a non-profit charity webcast, auction and party to benefit the National Brain Tumor Society.

Co-creators Jared (@agentbacardi) and Jo (@jopinionated) are producing and hosting a live webcast in Los Angeles on August 25 with LOST alum (cast and creative), coinciding with an online auction of LOST and TV/film memorabilia, props and autographed items (open from 8/15 – 8/29).

100% of all proceeds from all of the above will go directly to the NBTS, a charity selected in honor of Jo’s dear friend Jackie O, who passed away on 8/3/12 after fighting brain tumors and cancer with great spirit for four years.

Annemarie's Brush with Greatness

by Annemarie Brown

So I had a pretty amazing thing happen yesterday. Anyone familiar with the TV show "Lost" knows of Damon Lindelof, he's one of the co-creators (with JJ Abrams) of the show and wrote many of the episodes. Damon follows me on Twitter (you can find him @DamonLindelof) and saw a picture I posted a couple months ago of a custom I did of John Locke, a character from the show. It was awesome enough that he got to see it at all, but what was even more unbelievable was when he commissioned me to do a custom Vinylmation for him! All he requested was it be Hurley in a DHARMA jumpsuit, and the rest was up to me. Here he is!
My original plan was to do him as a 3" figure, but as a huge Lost fan, I quickly realized the amount of detail I wanted to put into him would require a 9" canvas. I included his chef logo, his lottery ticket with the infamous Numbers, and the DHARMA van in the ear. Hurley wouldn't be complete without an array of his favorite snacks, so I also put in an Apollo chocolate bar, Mr. Cluck's fried chicken and of course... ranch dressing!

On the back I included an airplane (Oceanic 815, perhaps?) his makeshift golf-course flag and golf ball, and the guitar case he carried throughout most of season 6.

I wanted to show my appreciation for making the best TV show ever, so I personalized the bottom.

After I finished the vinyl I was having so much fun (honestly) I decided to make a special Lost-themed Vinylmation box to put him in.

So I grabbed an old Urban box and threw in some jungle and the Smoke Monster and some other little hidden goodies to complete the piece!

Hurley and little Locke sneaking around the jungle.

The most amazing part of this whole thing was getting to hang out with Damon for a couple hours, he visited the studio and then we went out for beers and TALKED ABOUT LOST which, believe it or not, he admitted he really enjoyed doing. He also brought (and signed for me!) a cool 9" DHARMA BearBrick figure.

For this Lost fan it was an absolute dream come true, and Hurley couldn't have gone to a better home!

Annemarie (and DV) are famous!

In case you aren't following our friend Annemarie, yesterday her tweet of our story about her John Locke figure was retweeted by none other than Lost Series big wig, Damon Lindelof. This marks the second time someone who is not directly related to Vinylmation has connected to Destination Vinylmation. (The first was in an online article in the Pop Candy section of USA Today which was suggested by Ryan Thompson)

This might seem self congratulatory, but we're pretty excited. Congrats and thanks to Annemarie for the wonderful work. Thanks everyone who reads our post and everyone who comments and just a big thanks to the whole community!

Another reason we're so excited is that we both loved LOST when it was on, and listening to podcasts about LOST is what inspired us to do our own Vinylmation podcast. So we owe a lot to LOST and both Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse. Plus we loved the new Star Trek too.

Spotlight On: Cesar Diaz

Last week, Cesar Diaz from Reseda, CA sent us pictures of his custom Vinylmation LOST set. Check it out here if you missed it. Impressed by this set, we asked Cesar a few questions about his artwork.

Destination Vinylmation: How long have you been creating custom Vinylmation?

Cesar: I've been doing customs for about a year now. Only recently has it become more serious.

DV: How many pieces have you created?

Cesar: I've done about a total of 25 vinylmation customs. I started off with Munny customs. But once Vinylmations were introduced there was no turning back.
DV: What's your favorite creation?

Cesar: My favorite so far is Lilo. That was the first custom I added clothes to.

DV: What other art-forms do you create?

Cesar: I do illustrations and cartoon/comic drawings.
DV: Do you collect the Vinylmation created by Disney artists?

Cesar: Of course I do! I only collect the ones I like though.

DV: What is your favorite Disney Vinylmation figure?

Cesar: My favorite is Stitch (Park 5), although Buzz Lightyear is great as well.

DV: Can you describe the creation process of the LOST figures?

Cesar: The origin of the LOST customs came from an idea my cousin Steve Zaragoza and I had. We started to talk one day about how cool it would be if Disney would make a LOST series. But we realized that probably would never happen. So I decided to make my own. The first one I did was Locke. My cousin Steve sent me a sketch of Locke. Once I get the sketch I modify it to make it work on a vinyl. Steve designed Locke, Hurley and Kate.
The others were designed myself. I always knew I wanted to do a series of 12 vinyls. Some days I would make 1 per day, others it was 3 per day. As far as the clothing, I wanted to put them in the clothes they wore the day of the crash. None of them were really hard to do, just a lot of fun to make.

DV: Some artists struggle, but you made good use of the ears. Was painting the island on the ears your plan from the start?
Cesar: Your so right! The ears are always a challenge. When my cousin Steve sent me the first sketch of Locke he put the island on the ears, which I thought was brilliant. It wasn't until I had a couple of vinyls made that I decided to make a part of the island in the ears, so when you put them together it completes the island.

DV: Which one of the Lost figures you created is your favorite?

Cesar: I don't really have a favorite. I love them all. I did have a lot of fun designing Charlie, his shoes especially.
DV: Where you happy with the LOST finale?

Cesar: At first I was a bit disappointed. Not many things got answered about the island. But as time went by, I re-watched the finale and I get it now. It was never really about the island. It was always about the people. So I'm happy with the ending. LOST will always be a big part of my life.

DV: Will we see a LOST Series 2 from you?

Cesar: Most definitely! I'm already thinking about the characters. One thing's for sure, Series 2 will be the Dharma edition. I'm really looking forward to creating Desmond and Ben.

DV: Do you have any for sale?

Cesar: All the vinyls I create are for sale. I also do special requests.

DV: How can people contact you?

Cesar: If people are interested in any customs, they can email me at darthcees@gmail.com also they can add the facebook group "My Customations".

DV: Any tips for people who want to begin creating custom Vinylmation?

Cesar: The only tip I can give is to have fun with it! Oh, and try to get your work seen. It's always good for people to review your stuff.

LOST: Found

One of our listeners and Vinylmation custom artist Cesar Diaz
sent in these pictures of a 12 figure LOST set he created. He did
a fantastic job and we are excited to share these photos with you.
Check back for an interview with Cesar about this set and his
other creations coming soon. Click here for a look at the whole set.
Here is a closer look at a few:
Jack

As with all the figures in
this set, Cesar decided to
captures Jack's Season 1
look. Great detail with the
jacket and tie and scrapes
on the face.
Locke

My favorite out of the set,
Cesar captured one of
John's signature moments,
the Orange Smile.
Charlie

Again, nice detail with the
clothing, putting Charlie in
the zipper hoodie. Check
out the hand:

Kate

Sawyer's nickname's were
were right on, as is Ceasar's
addition of freckles on Kate.
Vincent

Would he be the mystery
chaser? Nice placement of
the tongue hanging down to
the body. Very well layed
out design.
