Pirates of the Caribbean Vinylmation Explained

Update: 6/13/11 Disney announced today that the Pirates set will be released on June 18th.... in Hong Kong Disneyland!

Update: 6/11/11 Pirates will be released in Orlando's D-Street on July 1. D-Street will open at 10:30am with a "special release party". Then, from 1 - 3, POTC series artist Casey Jones will be on hand signing figures for guests. At Disneyland, Pirates will be released on July 3. We also have turn-arounds for all 12 figures, yes, including the mystery chaser. The chaser is a bit of a surprise. Not what we, or many other people expected. And in my opinion doesn't have that Wow! factor. If you want to see, click below for the chaser.

Update: 4/26/11 Disney updated the Vault page with pictures of 10 of the 12 figures. They didn't show us sketches of the chaser or Jack Sparrow (who we already know about).

Update: 4/20/11 Jack Sparrow will be included in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean set! A "beginning of July" release window was also announced.

Pirates of the Caribbean will be released as a 12 figure blind box set with 11 regular figures and one mystery chaser. Casey Jones designed this set based on the Pirates attraction at the Disney theme parks. This set is slated to be released at the beginning of July.

	Pirate Top Hat Two! Top hats with this set. This time, this one has a Skull and Crossbones on it. Very interesting.

	Hook Hand Pirate We have already seen this pirate in a blurry photo. A hook for a hand!!!
	Barrel Jack Sparrow Probably the only Johnny Depp in the series. Also probably the only movie reference.
	Patch The Disney Imagineers had a very long day and this was the very last Pirate in the attraction they had to name.
	Dirty Foot Pirate I was always nervous to look up when passing under the bridge for fear that slime from his disgusting foot would drop down on me. Scuba Owl though we should add this pic!
	POTC Man at Well This unfortunate man is awaiting his turn to be dunked in the well. Check out the detail of the ropes across his chest. He is the middle guy on the right in yellow.
	Tiny Tiny is one of the girls being auctioned off on Isla Tesoro. She smiles because of the attention the Pirates are giving her. Nice detail with the cap on her head.
	Helmsman We have already seen a Pirate Helmsman in Park 5, but this one is much more detailed.

Yo Ho, Yo Ho, May 21 Release for Me!

Update: 5/14/11 We now know the details of the May 21st custom Pirates release.

When: Saturday, May 21 from 2pm - 5pm
Where: D-Street, Downtown Disney District, Disneyland Resort
What: Local California artist have been asked to create Pirates of the Caribbean inspired custom Vinylmation. This doesn't seem to mean characters from the attraction or movie, just inspired by.

	Artist: Javier Soto Edition Size: 1 Retail: $1200 Javier is scheduled to appear to meet collectors and sign autographs. This mixed media figure has a wonderful pirate hat and one bare foot (good thing it's not dirty). He is also holding a jug of what we can assume is fine rum fit for a pirate!
	Artist: Lana Crooks Edition Size: 1 Retail: $850 Lana is not scheduled to appear. Another mixed media piece, this one is wearing a nicely designed jacket. He has great detail in his face. And to top it all off, an awesome looking octopus on his head! With an eye patch!
	Artist: Miss Mindy Edition Size: 1 Retail: $850 Miss Mindy is scheduled to appear to meet collectors and sign autographs. I'll be honest, I'm not sure if you would find this Pirate at the traveling carnival or on a pirate ship. She has a wonderful peg leg, a great looking custom nose and a very colorful costume. The heart shaped eye patch is attached, not painted. As with the bow on the head. And the skull and crossbones in the ear is a great detail.
	Artist: Scott Tolleson Edition Size: 1 Retail: $595 No word if Scott is scheduled to appear. This design is a Pirate sitting on top of his pile of gold. Lots of treasure is seen scattered around the pile. From the background, he appears to be in a cave. On the back is a parrot sitting on a treasure chest.
	Artist: Noah Edition Size: 12 Retail: $595 Noah is not scheduled to appear. Noah posted this picture on his own blog the other day, announcing he was creating a limited edition Pirates of the Caribbean inspired Vinylmation. Now its official this will be part of the May 21 release!

Update: 5/14/11 At Midnight @noahfineart announced that he was ALSO making a Pirate 9" Custom (as well as the previously announced Little Mermaid custom). So now it looks like the May 21st release and signing is with Noah at Disneyland.

Vinylmation Speculation: Noah's Pirate?

Update: 5/9/11 On the podcast (and on this post) we've compared this release to the release of the Noah special 9" TRON customs. Now there's reason to believe that he might actually be the artist of this one to. Tonight @NoahDineArt tweeted this:
Remember that the Noah TRON series had 36 individual custom 9" figures. Each vinyl cost $595.00. Will that part stay the same too? Since the announcement at the Art of Disney blog is only for California, will this series be smaller than 36? The release date is fast approaching. I have a feeling we will find out more, really really soon.

Update: 4/10/11 The Art of Disney blog has changed the wording of the announcement to include the words 9" in the description of this even. (Compare this to the original announcement farther below)
This begs the questions, "Is it just one design? Is it a very limited Series like the Noah 9" TRON figures? Is it a set of 9"?" What do you think?

4/2/11 It's April 2nd, so this is not a April Fool's prank.


As normal, we were clicking the links looking for Muppets 2 info on the Art of Disney Event's page, and lo and behold, they updated it. Most of the dates in the calender are already known, but one new date stuck out. May 21st! The rumored Pirates (of the Caribbean?) set will be released that day, along with a signing of the set at the Disneyland Resort from 2-5pm. This date makes sense, as Pirates 4 On Stranger Tides opens on May 20th.

No word yet on the artist, but since it's California it's a possibility that the artist is Monty.

Vinylmation Speculation: Noah's Pirate?

Update: 5/14/11 In yet another odd change of events, last night @noahfineart announced that the Little Mermaid custom was not the only one he was doing. He is also doing the Pirates 9" custom. We haven't seen any confirmation, but we assume that this is the 9" Custom that will be released with a signing on May 20th. Update: 5/11/11 Noah posted another clue on twitter. This time he says, "a girl". Does this mean he made a custom of the famous "redhead" from the auction scene in the ride? If not, this might mean that he's going a different direction, and it might not be pirate related at all! Any thoughts?
We decided to break all this speculation into a separate post, to keep the May 21st Pirate Custom release post. Update: 5/10/11 We are still waiting word on what Noah meant by yesterday's tweet about a new Vinylmation release. We are speculating he is the artist behind this May 21st custom Pirates Vinylmation and a look at his blog today added more fuel to that speculation. Noah attended the May 7th Disneyland premiere of the newest Pirates movie to sign his work for guests. Noah also produced this piece of Pirates artwork:

Here Come the Pirates!

Disney today announced some the details of the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean series. It will be a blind box set based on the theme park attraction and will have 11 characters with 1 mystery chaser. Although this series is not based on the movie, a Jack Sparrow chaser is a real possibility... as he was added to the ride a few years back. Disney should release pictures of more figures as the time comes. We expect the series to be released on May 21st (if the Art of Disney blog is right). Yesterday we saw the Dirty Foot Pirate by Casey Jones. The figure below is also a Casey creation. This series should also give us a good idea of how they will do "attraction" series like the Haunted Mansion set expected in September.
Also notice that this series will be using the new vinylmation mold design.

Dirty Foot Pirate

As part of the news today about the new form of Vinylmation, Disney released this figure. He is the Dirt Foot Pirate from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. This pirate has stuck in my head since I was a little kid. I am always afraid to look up at him when passing under the bridge for fear some of the grim on his foot will drip off onto me. This iconic Pirate was designed by Casey Jones for an upcoming series. For more on the changes to the Vinylmation shape, check out our posts: Mickey's Modified Mold and Best Foot Forward. We know there will be a May 21st Release of a 9" Pirate as referenced by the Art of Disney blog. Is this figure involved in that Pirates release?
