Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Mike Vetrone

Mike Vetrone, an artist from San Jose, CA, shares his Vinylmation 95 custom with us.

Destination Vinylmation: We know this is your first Vinylmation 95 custom, but have you done Mickey mold customs before?  
Mike Vetrone: I have done several 3 in customs  and  just finished my first 9".  I've really caught the custom bug the last couple months.

DV: Tell us a little about your artistic background.
MV: Well I've been painting pretty much my whole life (I'm 22) though art classes and leisure.  I am a graphic designer by profession so it's nice to step away from the keyboard and express myself through another medium.

DV: Your Up car is a great design. Clean and simple, it really gets the subject across. Why did you choose Up as your first subject for this car shape canvas?
MV: Well I've caught the Up fever like many other collectors right now so I thought it would be great. My good friend helped me out deciding what to put as well.

DV: I love the grape bumper sticker! What is your favorite part of this design?
MV: Thanks!  I'd have to say the house or balloons, both took an excruciating amount of time to complete.  I am very proud of the piece as a whole  though.

DV: What was the biggest challenge with working on this canvas?
MV: Deciding to keep it a car or not.  I'm happy that I chose to keep the essential elements of  the car in tact.

Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Ryan Marella

We caught up with previously featured custom vinylmation artist Ryan Marella and asked him about his recent work with the new Vinylmation 95 mold.

Destination Vinylmation: The Delorean is a GREAT idea for the Vinylmation 95 mold! How long did it take you to come up with this idea after seeing the Lightning shape CYO?

Ryan Marella:  I've always been a big fan of Back to the Future movies, so when I saw the VM 95 CYO  I already knew it was one of the customs I wanted to create.

DV: My favorite little details are the lightning bolts on the spoiler and side of car, but there seems to be a ton of detail in the rear of the car. Is the Flux capacitor in there somewhere?

RM: The Flux Capacitor is in there, its just the top view of it .

DV: The Star Tours custom is also extremely well thought out. You take the basic features of the Starspeeder 1000 and place them onto the car mold. It's amazing how well it translates, especially the side doors. Are you happy with the outcome?

RM: Yes, I am happy with the overall outcome.

DV: R2 was a perfect addition. Was he always going to be an extra piece instead of painted on?

RM: I wanted to keep most of the detail painted and not have to use any clay to accent it. Except for R2-D2, I wanted R2 to pop out.

DV: You have a ton of experience working on the Mickey shaped mold, as an artist, what are the main differences between working on Mickey and the Car shaped molds?

RM: VM 95 mold is a bigger canvas, but my ideas were limited to cars, ships some rides. The Mickey VM I'm able to create multiple characters, places, rides and all sorts of other things.

DV: Did you enjoy it enough to make more on the Vinylmation 95 CYO?

RM: I did enjoy painting on the VM 95 mold, I plan to create many more customs on this mold.
It's just matter of figuring out what I should create.

Also remember that Disneyland will be having a trading night tonight from 7-10 at the Pacific Ballroom at the Paradise Pier Hotel.They will also be having signing with Monty Maldovan and Quynh Kimball throughout the day and at the trade event.
Over in Orlando, WDW will have a Park Starz Series artist signing with Thomas Scott and Casey Jones from 5-7 at D-Street. D-Street WDW will also be getting the new 9" CYO Vinylmation '95 pieces.

Update 6/13/12 We have a price point for the CYO Vinylmation 95. It will be $39.95 according to the Disney Vinylmation Events page.

On June 15th, a Create Your Own version of the new 9" Lightning shaped Vinylmation will release at WDW and DLR.

Today, June 9, is the opening of the Wonderground Gallery at Downtown Disney California. It is an art gallery full of amazing paintings and various collectibles and will be the showcase for the new Vinylmation 95.

Noah and a few other artists will be the first to present their customs to the public for purchase, then a Create Your Own will go on sale on June 15 at D-Streets.

Late yesterday, our own Zoe took a peak inside the store.

You can see (besides Zoe's reflection) Cast Members still setting up inside.

If you would like to get a custom Vinylmation 95 at the Wondergallery, Disney has posted the following information:
"Guests may line up for the Grand Opening of the WonderGround Gallery on June 9, 2012 behind the Rainforest Cafe. In addition, beginning at 7am, wristbands will be distributed for the Vinylmation™ 95 releases in conjunction with the WonderGround Gallery Grand Opening.  We ask that you please not line up prior to 6am.  Wristbands are limited.  Limits will apply.  Merchandise not guaranteed.  All information subject to change without notice."

In addition to the Lightning mold customs, the Disney Vinylmation Blog gave us all a peak at a Mickey mold custom designed by Miss Mindy that will be available.
