Another Park Starz 2 revealed

Pic from Vinylmation World
According to Vinylmation World, the second figure of Park Starz 2 was revealed at a special D23 event for the 30th anniversary of EPCOT. It appears to be a Tree Troll from the Maelstrom ride. It also resembles one the unpainted molds we saw in one of the videos from Disney early this year. Now remember that Park Starz 2 will not be available until 2013!

What Disney Sidekick did you choose?
Eeyore and the weasel from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
-

Why did you choose the Eeyore sidekick?
Eeyore's a fun character, always moping around and being a great contrast to the other characters of the 100 Acre Wood. There are some days that I feel like Eeyore. I had an interesting design that I wanted to try where his snout extends down onto the body and he's standing on all fours.

Favorite Disney Movie?
Fantasia

Favorite Disney Theme Park Attraction?
Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye.

Favorite aspect of working on the Mickey shaped canvas?
Because it's Mickey. I've customized all kinds of urban vinyl over the years, but Mickey's fun because I have a Disney connection and I can share my work with other Disney fans and we can share an appreciation and connection to the shape or subject matter. I also love the ears, there's so much creative stuff you can do with the ears.

Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Ashley

Today we feature a new artist to our spotlight section. Ashley from Greeley, CO has sent us some pictures of her Up, Finding Nemo and Ratatouille themed customs.

Destination Vinylmation: How long have you been creating custom Vinylmation?
Ashley: I've been a huge fan on Vinylmations since 2008, but only started doing my own customs about 4 months ago.

DV: Have you done other artistic projects before Vinylmation?
Ashley: I've always painted, but mostly on canvas before Vinylmations.

DV: Do you collect the Disney Vinylmation?
Ashley: Yes! I am a huge collector! They've taken over most spare surfaces in my place.

DV: If so, what are some of your favorites?
Ashley: I love the Matryoshka doll from cutesters I and am a huge fan of the entire toy story set! Even though I have them all, I always trade for them when I see them in trader boxes.

DV: Why did you choose Up and Finding Nemo as the subjects of these customs?
Ashley: Up might be my very favorite Disney movie, so I have had this design in my mind for awhile. As for Peach, she is the highlight of the Nemo ride at WDW for me and I knew she'd look great on Mickey!

DV: You also sent over pictures of your Ratatouille custom... I see a theme here. Big Pixar fan?
Ashley: Huge! I'm currently on a mission to do one from every Pixar film. Next will be bugs life and Wall-E.

DV: How long does it take to choose just the right scene for the vinyl? And does it take a lot of pre-planning on paper?
It's more about finding inspiration in the right place. Like a ride, seeing the movie again or a great poster. I usually do one pre-design on paper to see if it suits Mickey and then go to town!

DV: What was the most challenging part about creating these customs?
Ashley: Finding a way to take a flat design and apply it to Mickey! Once I do a few sketches and outlines things go smoothly from there!

DV: Do you have a website where people can see more of your work?
Ashley: I don't have one yet, but people are welcome to contact me at twisted.coincidence@gmail.com.

Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Jerai Marella

Destination Vinylmation: The Brave 9" is just remarkable. It looks almost like a chalk painting to me. The shading is beautiful. Can you talk to us about the creation process on this piece?
Jerai Marella: Creating the Brave 9" custom starts with some research into the character  pics, then a  simple sketch of the character.I was surprised that it took me only one sketch to get the correct expression on Merida .I usually sketch a character out 3 to 4 times before getting the right expression. From the sketch It's all about painting the right colors and the right  shade.

DV: That is one of the most beautifully draw Meridas I have seen. How long does it take you to get a character down? Have you sketched her a few times before putting her down onto the vinyl canvas?
JM: Achieving the correct textures is all about  trial and error, you have to test all types of brushes on a practice canvas just to see how it translates on to it.It may take some time, but it's fun to see how each different texture brings life to your art.

DV: The Masters of the Universe triple set is just plain cool. How did you decide to do this set?
JM: I've been meaning to create a He-Man set, then in  a forum I go to see many amazing artist post customs, some one asked  if any one has created a he-man custom before......that's when I decided that  it's time to create He-Man and the Masters of the Universe customs.

DV: Are any of these available for purchase?
JM: The Brave custom is still for sale, please contact me if you're interested. The He-Man set in the pic shown has already been sold, but I can always create another,my customs are available for purchase. Please contact me via email jerai022@yahoo.com and visit www.ryactiv.sketchlab7.com.

Hands-Down, my favorite attraction is Fantasmic!  It just never gets old, no matter how many times I've seen it - To me, the show brings the iconic "Disney Magic" to LIFE!

Favorite aspect of working on the Mickey shaped canvas?
Being able to see past Mickey and realize the design, then bring it to life is exciting!  Although "Mickey Mouse" looks great on Vinylmation, it's so fun to make it more than that.

My favorite disney movie.. that's hard. It amost seems unfair to have to answer that. I'd have to say it's Disney's Robin Hood.

Favorite Disney Theme Park Attraction?
Hmm. Theme Park Attraction... Expidition Everest gets me every time.

Favorite aspect of working on the Mickey shaped canvas?
I actually kind of hate every aspect of working on the Mickey shaped canvas. So I guess my favorite aspect would have to be that it's Mickey. Anything Disney, I'll take it.

What Disney Sidekick did you choose?
Rajah from Aladdin

Why did you choose that sidekick?
Rajah is a very loyal sidekick to Jasmine throughout the movie and I love his character design. My favorite scene from the movie is where Jafar transforms Rajah into a cub. He has an adorable confused expression that I wanted to capture in my custom. In addition, I have always been a fan of cats.

Favorite Disney Movie?
I think this is the hardest question I’ve ever been asked. Growing up, I was always a fan of Beauty and the Beast. While now I can’t pick a favorite, some of my other favorites include Tangled, Mulan, Princess and the Frog, Brave, Up, and Monsters Inc.

Favorite Disney Theme Park Attraction?
While I love the People Mover at Magic Kingdom, my favorite ride is Toy Story Mania at Hollywood Studios. The ride is so much fun, even though my score could use improving.

Favorite aspect of working on the Mickey shaped canvas?
In addition to loving the challenge of creating art on a 3D mold, I love that every piece I design is shaped like the mouse that started it all. While I enjoy the other molds Disney has created, the Mickey mold will always be my favorite.

What Disney Sidekick did you choose?
I chose Creeper from Disney's movie, The Black Cauldron, which was released in 1985.

Why did you choose that sidekick?
Sadly, The Black Cauldron was not much of a hit for Disney, but I really enjoyed it as a kid.  It's based on a great series of books by Lloyd Alexander.  Because the film is not as popular as some of Disney's biggest hits, there is very little merchandising.  When there is merchandise, commonly pins, it usually features the visually striking villain, the Horned King, or the lovable heroic sidekick, Gurgi.  In fact, these two appeared together in a Vinylmation 9"/3" combo set a few years ago for the movie's 25th Anniversary.  That's actually when I got the idea to do the Horned King's sidekick, Creeper.  Creeper is a hilarious, goblin-like underling with a mix of Igor and Gollum in him.  He is horribly abused by his master, and you can't help but sympathize for the guy, even though he's evil.  I think he has the most humorous moment at the end of the movie (SPOILER ALERT) when he realizes the Horned King is gone forever.  At first he laments that his master is gone, and then realizes that hey, he is GONE, and starts laughing and celebrating!  Going back to the set released by Disney, I thought it was amazing, but I thought Creeper should have been in there with the Horned King.  When I was invited to participate in the Custom Artist Project, I immediately wanted to do Creeper as my Sidekick!  I also thought it would be cool to make a Black Cauldron accessory to accompany him!

Favorite Disney Movie?
That is tough!! My favorite animated film is Beauty and the Beast, and my favorite live action film has to be a tie between TRON and The Black Hole.

Favorite Disney Theme Park Attraction?
The Haunted Mansion is my all time favorite.

Favorite aspect of working on the Mickey shaped canvas?
After three years of doing Vinylmation customs, I really have come to appreciate just how adaptable the Mickey shaped canvas is for creating just about any character.  If you design it right, you can make tall, short, thin, or chubby characters fit by playing with their wardrobe and accessories.  You can also give the illusion of flatter faces or snouts.  As for the ears, I used to find them the most perplexing part of the mold, but now, I consider them the best.  The ears can be used to place eyes, pointed ears, and antennae, or they can be used to set the scene by providing a sense of the background environment.

Thank you, as always, for your generous spotlight of my Vinylmation work!
